I have been a big fan of Jordan Pickell on Instagram for years and I was delighted to connect when she invited me for a conversation about my practices on the podcast. Jordan and her friend, Alison McCleary, created Edge of the Couch to offer some guidance and insights for new therapists and therapists-in-training.
In this interview, Jordan and I dive deep into how we as BIPOC therapists may practice a justice-oriented approach that is much more humanizing for us and our marginalized clients than the industry’s general expectations of depoliticized neutrality.
Topics of the episode include:
the myth of unidirectional influence in the therapeutic relationship
navigating varying layers and complexities of power between therapist and client
holding both sameness and differences in regard to experiences of marginalization
naming systems of oppression in a client-centered way
feeling through helplessness and envisioning more liberatory worlds
self-celebration, play, and joy as a part of grief
and more…
