I have been a big fan of Jordan Pickell on Instagram for years and I was delighted to connect when she invited me for a conversation about my practices on the podcast. Jordan and her friend, Alison McCleary, created Edge of the Couch to offer some guidance and insights for new therapists and therapists-in-training.

In this interview, Jordan and I dive deep into how we as BIPOC therapists may practice a justice-oriented approach that is much more humanizing for us and our marginalized clients than the industry’s general expectations of depoliticized neutrality.

Topics of the episode include:

  • the myth of unidirectional influence in the therapeutic relationship

  • navigating varying layers and complexities of power between therapist and client

  • holding both sameness and differences in regard to experiences of marginalization

  • naming systems of oppression in a client-centered way

  • feeling through helplessness and envisioning more liberatory worlds

  • self-celebration, play, and joy as a part of grief

  • and more…
